What is Builder Rank?
Builder is the rank following Student.
ORE members with Builder rank have additional permissions that lower ranks don’t have.
These permissions consist of:
- An additional plot on the Build server
- Access to World Edit commands and tools
- Able to apply for Engineer (Highest non-staff rank)
If you fail your application or trial, you can always try again after 24 hours.
Prior to Applying: Expected Knowledge
Before you decide to jump right into getting Builder rank, you need to make sure you’re prepared.
In order to get Builder, you need to provide proof that you have sufficient knowledge of computational redstone.
This includes the following:
- Converting between Binary (base 2) numbers and Decimal (base 10/ normal) numbers
- Addition and Subtraction in Binary
- Understanding logic gates
- Building, explaining, and operating a Half Adder, Full Adder, and ALU (Arithmetic and Logic Unit)
- Understanding 2’s Complement
The best way to ensure you pass your trial first try, is to make sure you practice each topic multiple times with different teachers.
This guide will not teach you the knowledge to get Builder, but the list of topics is there so you know the general direction your learning will take.
Getting Builder Rank Part 1: The Application
Once you feel you posses adequate knowledge, you can begin the application process.
Before posting an application, know that there is a required format to follow.
The format is as follows:
What do you like the most about redstone?:
What’s a thing you have made which demonstrates redstone knowledge?:
What does the thing do?:
Image(s) and/or video(s) of the device:
What do you plan on making for your build trial?:
Do you agree with the rules?:
Make sure to include images or videos of the decide in question for the 3rd and 5th sections.
It is typical that people submit an ALU for both sections, other creations are permitted, but it is best to check with staff prior to submitting an application.
Remember that you can always look at members’ accepted applications here: Latest Builder Applications/ Accepted - Topic
It helps to know what works and what doesn’t, so feel free to look around for ideas (but don’t plagerize).
Other application info is supplied here: Read Before Posting - Builder - Thread
Feel free to read it to make sure you have the best chances of your application being accepted.
Applications are submitted here: Latest Builder Applications - Topic
Simply click the blue + in the bottom right and start making your application.
Your application will be accepted or denied in the replies, so make sure to check whether or not it has been accepted yet.
You can always ask staff members to check your application if it hasn’t been looked at, but make sure not to bother them to the point of spam.
Getting Builder Rank Part 2: The Trial
Once your application has been accepted, now you need to complete a Builder Trial.
This is an hour-long interview with a staff member where you are asked to build the device in the 5th section of the application AND answer questions related to computational redstone.
It is your responsibility to find a staff member who is online, and ask them to trial you.
Staff is not obligated to do trials whenever you ask, so if they say no don’t pester them.
First, you will be asked to do
/build and then to teleport to the staff member trialing you.
You will be given the rank
Testificate and the trial will officially begin.
You will either build or answer questions first (or sometimes both at the same time, depends on the staff member and what you want)
The building part will consist of you building the device in the 5th section of your application.
Again, it is a good idea to practice building this prior to the trial.
If you need assistance with world edit, the staff member trialing you should be able to help.
You will be asked to operate your build to show, not only that it works but, that you understand how it works.
The question part will consist of questions similar to the following:
- What is 1001 + 110?
- What is 13 in binary?
- What is 11101 in decimal?
- What is 5 XOR 3?
- What is 0110 NOR 0011?
- What is the 2’s complement of 0110?
You will likely also be asked about your build and how it works.
If your build is not an ALU, you may still be asked ALU-related questions.
Following this guide properly is likely to lead to you getting Builder without much confusion.
Everyone learns at a different pace so don’t rush yourself if you need time and don’t wait if you’re able to keep working at it.
If you have any further questions, feel free to reply with it and I’ll answer.
