yes, we are looking for an ALU (arithmetic logic unit) and therefore it needs to be able to perform logical operations. Showing in binary is totally fine and what we would normally expect. anything else is more than we require.

This is normally called a mux ALU. Mux meaning switched.
Unfortunately we don’t accept mux ALUs. If you want, it might be beneficial to talk to some people on the server to get further guidance on how to create a control-line based ALU that makes gates my modifying the behavior of the adder.
