Release old game chat

Requested Change: Release the prior game chat channel as a view only.
Reasons for change: We were all there, and there’s things there that would be helpful to get. Also there’s not a great reason to hide it.
Reasons for no change (optional but recommended): I could see that there may be content in there that’s not the best, but it’s something that was there for a long time, why take it from us now. Also, it’s something wanted by the community smhsmh.

@nickster any reason you are against it?

Why Isn’t The Old Game Chat Channel Public?

Swapping out the game chat channel is something we’ve had in mind for a while now. We recognize that it is frustrating and a bit sad losing access to that message history, so you at least deserve an explanation. So what’s the motivation for this? There are two main reasons:

  1. Rule changes. When the ORE Discord was first created and linked with the in-game chat, our rules regarding behavior in chat were stated and enforced much differently than they are now. There are many things in that channel that are no longer acceptable on ORE, and going through the backlog to sanitize it all would be a monumental task. Even if we did somehow manage to go through and sanitize every overtly inappropriate or unacceptable message, there would still be the problem of:
  2. Giving people a clean slate. Over the many years, many people have talked in ORE chat without necessarily considering or even being aware of the fact that it would be publicly logged and searchable in a Discord channel; people who may have been young and immature and said things and acted ways that they never would these days; people who may have been at vulnerable times in their lives and revealed things they would think better of revealing now; people who deserve second chances, and to not have the thing they said in a Minecraft chat 5 years ago hanging over their head waiting for someone to go screenshot it and create drama.

So, yes, it’s frustrating losing access to that message history, but hopefully you can at least understand our reasons.

And yet so far, everyone wants it released, with literally no one opposed (for now). I feel that yes, your reasons do make sense, if the community as a group wants something, I would hope that you all would listen to us. Perhaps some form of compromise could be made? A way that things could be requested?

I don’t necessarily disagree with staff’s decision, but it does feel a bit strange to focus exclusively on that channel. If the goal is truly to give players a clean slate and clear up rule-breaking messages, then it’s probably best to do it across the board. I know I’ve seen plenty of messages that break the current rules in various other channels, not just game-chat.

Minecraft chat being recorded indefinitely is at least a bit different, but the point still stands that people mature and may regret the inappropriate actions that weren’t removed (since they weren’t rule-breaking at the time).

This is the first change proposed in a while I fully agree with

I think most people would like this change reverted.

While some of the chat may break rules I think that’s true of all channels. This also has not been really done before, I think it should either be for everything or nothing.

I think that there is a lot of reasons for it to be public as well. From what I have seen people still want it to be public even though the reasons listed. I think it’s fine as long as maybe there is a message saying that the rules were different or something at the bottom or its pinned. (Sorry if mistakes on mobile)
